Audits and Appeals
Audits: There are three basic types of audits:
- Correspondence Audits: Occasionally, taxpayers may receive letters from the IRS questioning an item on their tax return. This is usually a result of conflicting information received from other sources. Most can be handled by responding promptly with the necessary information. I do not charge for handling these if I prepared your return.
- Office Audits: These involve more complex issues and require a meeting between an IRS agent and the taxpayer and/or his representative. I can either accompany you at this meeting or serve as your representative at your option. Depending on the issues being raised, there may be a charge for this service.
- Field Audits: These are conducted at the taxpayers residence or place of business. Due to the complex nature of these audits, an additional charge will be made for the service.
Appeals: If you and your return examiner cannot agree on the disposition of your case, there is level of appeal within the IRS before going to tax court: the administrative appeals conference. I can assist you in writing this request and act as your agent if you so desire.
In both of these situations I can act as your representative even if I did not prepare the return. Only Attorneys, Certified Public Accounts, and Enrolled Agents are granted this privilege by the IRS.
